Practice questions

To do questions quickly and accurately, I highly recommend The ESAT Move Register, by Lucas Rey (DPhil candidate in Engineering Science at Oxford, MRes Cambridge). This book contains shortcuts that save time on ESAT questions: 11 moves, 90 worked examples and 50 practice questions, and each shortcut is shown with the point at which it stops working. Buying the book also buys every later version of it, automatically and with nothing to claim.

While a chatbot (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) will answer any ESAT question freely, it will not understand how candidates get them wrong, because students do not publish their mistakes. Lucas has spent years tutoring candidates, observing their mistakes, and writing them down after every lesson. As he continues to tutor, each new edition of the book takes whatever is new in those notes and adds it. That is the part nobody can generate, scrape or buy, and everything else the book does comes out of it.

The ESAT does not allow the use of calculators. I don’t use a calculator for any of these solutions, and I never have.
